UPDATE: Police release name of potential drowning victim

MENOMINEE COUNTY -- UPDATE: Sunday, 10:00 p.m. EST

Police are now releasing the name of the man they believe drowned in the Menominee River on Thursday night.

The name of the victim is Mark Geib, of Wallace.

The 48-year-old man was night fishing from the shore of the river and while attempting to retrieve a fish on his line, fell into the water and was lost in the river.

Divers from Marinette County, Wisconsin and troopers from the Michigan State Police have been searching in and around the river since Friday morning.

The Menominee County Sheriff's Department has suspended dive operations, but Sheriff Kenny Marks is asking residents along the river to keep watch for anything that might come to the surface.

The Menominee Marine Patrol will continue daily patrols of the river to locate the victim's body.

Update Sat- May 28 9:50 a.m. EST

According to reports the search is still on for a missing 48-year old Wallace man that is alleged to have fallen into the Menominee River north of Menominee.

It is believed that divers from the Michigan State Police are assisting Saturday in the search.

Update 4:49 p.m. EST

The Marinette County Sheriff's Department's dive team is continuing its recovery operation in the hunt for a man who may have drowned in the Menominee River.

The unidentified 48-year-old man was fishing last night behind his home on River Drive.

He fell into the water while trying to retrieve a fish.

The call was reported to 911 at 9:30 p.m.

A safety diver and a search diver were on scene Friday scouring the north side of the river where he was last seen.

"We are very optimistic that the victim could likely be found today," said Menominee County Sheriff Kenny Marks.  "It's very likely that he's in an area not too far from where he entered the water."

Marks added the river and the current are very dangerous this time of year.

Update 7:25 a.m. EST

Further information is being released about a possible drowning on the Menominee River.

According to the Menominee County Sheriff's Department, emergency crews were called out at 11:31 p.m. CDT Thursday night.

The unidentified 48-year-old man from Wallace was fishing on the riverbank near N2100 River Drive in Menominee Township.  He fell in while trying to retrieve a fish.

Unsuccessful search and rescue operations were conducted until about 3:30 a.m. CDT Friday morning.  They will resume the search with the return of daylight.

The name of the victim is not being released pending notification of family.

According to the sheriff's department, cold water temperatures, water depth, darkness, water speed and alcohol use are all contributing factors in the accident.

Assisting in the search are members of the Menominee/Ingalllston Township Fire Department, Menominee City Fire Department, Marinette City Fire Department, Emergency Rescue Squad, Menominee County Water Rescue, Menominee County Marine Patrol, American Red Cross, Menominee County Victim Services Unit, Bay Area Paramedics, Michigan State Police, Menominee County Sheriff's Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station-Traverse City.

Search and rescue crews are on the Menominee River in Menominee County Friday morning.
    
According to the Menominee County Sheriff's Department, someone fell into the river, about five miles north of town.
     
Details are not being released at this time except we're being told crews are on the river.
