MARQUETTE -- When it comes to the problem of drug addiction, it's important that local organizations know what to expect when they encounter an addict.

That's why the MC Squared Substance Abuse Coalition, Pathways, Northcare and the Marquette Alger Great Start Collaborative held an Understanding Addiction program Tuesday morning.

Eighteen Upper Peninsula agencies attended the program, where addiction specialist Dr. John Lehtinen talked about how professionals can help manage addiction.

"People working in the Department of Human Services, foster care, anyone in the educational system, we have family health educators, basically anybody that has contact with families, children, pregnant moms, anyone that's encountering substance abuse or addiction with their clients," said Health Educator Sarah Derwin, when asked who attended the meeting.

About a hundred people attended the session.
