MARQUETTE -- A group of Marquette residents got the chance to see what kind of damage sea lamprey have done to Michigan lakes and what's being done about it.
Retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services biologist Bob Kahl explained how the sea lamprey invaded all five Great Lakes in just over 100 years. He also told of the various methods used to the control the lamprey population such as pesticides and traps.
Even though the lamprey population is under control now, Kahl warned that doing research and keeping the lamprey population down is key.
"It would be a case that if it's not continued, the fisheries of the Great Lakes would be diminished so quickly that it might be difficult, if ever possible, to get back to what we have now," said Kahl.
The presentation was sponsored by the Northern Center for Lifelong Learning.
