You can encounter any sort of medical situation when you venture into the U.P.'s wilderness
MARQUETTE TWP. -- A first aid training class, hosted by the American Red Cross, focused on everything from conditions related to extreme heat or cold, to someone who's going into labor.
Sunday, the two people taking the class participated in a scenario where they had to care for hikers they came upon in the woods who had been injured. The trainees then had to assess the situation and treat the victims' various injuries.
"When you're in the woods, it could be a few hours before EMS or anybody else is available to get to you, so it's important to have these kinds of knowledge and skills so that if you do come across someone while you're hiking, or while you're just playing outside, or while you're working, you have the knowledge and skills to help save someone's life," says Community Services Coordinator Christy Beck.
The 16-hour course was $150 but holds a two-year certification.
The American Red Cross usually hosts these training sessions twice a year.
