PELKIE -- Reading and writing were the focus of the annual Young Author's Day celebration at the Baraga Area Schools Friday.
Author Tom Birdseye was the special guest who spoke to students in grades K through six about the inspiration for some of his stories.
Birdseye has written more than a dozen picture books, children's novels and non-fiction books.
As he read Look Out Jack the Giant is Back, he told Pelkie Elementary School students that it took 23 rewrites to get the words just right.
"It's a great experience for all of the kids to get the opportunity to meet someone who has written an actual book," said teacher Jennifer Young. "It's a book that they read in class, and it's tangible to them. It makes it very real to see that there is a person behind the book."
The Young Author's Day festivities included art projects, snacks and an opportunity for students to share their own short stories.
