MARQUETTE -- The summer season is fast approaching, and that means more motorists on Michigan roads, and State Police are warning people to buckle up.
The State Police in Marquette, Houghton and Chippewa counties will be participating in "Buckle Up or Pay Up" this Memorial Day weekend. Officers will be focusing on seat belt enforcement from May 23 to June 5.
Statistics show that over 50 percent of people who died in vehicle crashes were not wearing their seatbelts.
Officers say for many motorists, the threat of a ticket is enough for them to buckle up.
"Since the summer travel season is coming upon us quickly with Memorial Day weekend, the Click It or Ticket mobilization is a way for police agencies to be out there to help keep people safe during the high traffic volume days," said Sgt. Randy Danison of the Michigan State Police.
The fine and associated costs for unbuckled adults is $65.
