MARQUETTE COUNTY -- Two people in Marquette County are facing felony charges after the disappearance of a 31-year-old Marquette woman earlier this month.  The victim was reported missing on May 5.

Police discovered that she had gone to her mother's residence.  When they tried to do a well being check on the woman, they were met with hostile resistance by a man at the home located on County Road 607 in Michigamme.

Calvin Martz, 63, refused to cooperate with police officers during the well being check, telling officers to get off his property.  Police received a search warrant on May 6 and tried to contact the victim through a loud speaker upon arriving at the home.

When officers didn't hear from the victim, they approached the house.  No reply was given from residents inside the building, which lead to an attempt to force entry into the home.  A person identified as Martz sprayed the officers with pepper spray during the attempted entry.  The spray caused officers to exit the home.

The victim tried to escape the residence during this time and was allegedly stopped from doing so.  She then went to another exit in the home and made it to law enforcement officers.

On Thursday, May 12, members of the Michigan State Police Fugitive Team gathered to serve arrest warrant for Martz and another resident of the home, 62-year-old Karen Kirby.

Troopers noticed Martz on his property and announced their presence, ordering him to the ground.  When Martz refused, he was shot with a bean bag gun and struggled with officers during the arrest.

Kirby was talked out of the residence and taken into custody.

Martz has been charged with three counts of assaulting and resisting a police officer, first degree criminal sexual conduct, and unlawful imprisonment.  His bond is set at $3.5 million.

Kirby is charged with unlawful imprisonment, with a bond of $500,000.

Both remain jailed and are expected in court Friday.
