MARQUETTE COUNTY -- This week, Cliff's mine employees are getting a chance to get rid of hazardous household items on their way to work.

The hazardous waste collection is open to all employees of the mine and LS&I Railroad, which totals about 1,700 workers.  Items such as tires, paint, and electronics are dropped off and disposed of by a downstate company.

The goal of the collection is to help employees while doing something good for the environment.

"I think for all of us, it's really difficult to work into our work schedule time to properly dispose of all this type of material, so to be able to make it convenient for our employees and to make sure that it is disposed of properly, it just seemed to make a lot of sense," said Cliffs District Manager for Public Affairs, Dale Hemmila.

Organizers say they've seen a great response so far.
