ESCANABA -- It's part of a three million dollar water project that will increase the flow of water in Escanaba, and the land phase of construction is nearing completion.
The water company is installing a new water intake pipe from the water plant to Little Bay de Noc. It'll be placed in the ground next to the current 100-year-old pipe which will be used as a reserve.
Barges have been bringing in materials from Sturgeon Bay. Crews have dug a trench box that's 27 feet deep.
Construction is also affecting those who enjoy the scenic drive.
"To make it safe for the pedestrians, we've had to close off the whole point. We're sorry about that, but it's something that has to be done to keep the pedestrians safe, the citizens safe, and the construction crew safe," said Escanaba Wastewater Superintendent, Don French.
The crew is expected to put the pipe in the bay by next week.
