One of the bond proposals calls for replacing the grass field with synthetic turf
KINGSFORD -- Breitung Township voters will have some big decisions to make on Tuesday. Two school bond proposals are on the ballot.
Proposal one focuses on essential technology and building upgrades, which is expected to pass. But the debate is focusing on proposal two which calls for resurfacing the tennis courts and replacing the grass football field with synthetic turf.
The $1.5 million project would cost the average tax payer an additional $12 per year over the next 10 years.
The school has held several public forums to discuss the proposal where opinions have been split.
"It may be a nice thing to have, but it's primarily a pride thing,” said Breitung Township resident John Dougoveto. ”I think in these days when we are trying to hold on government spending, we don't need to be spending that kind of money on something that we really don't need."
Others feel the benefits outweigh the cost.
"It's a great thing for kids, it's a great thing for the community, and I think it will be a benefit,” said Breitung Township resident Tim McGuire. “I think after it's in and done that we're all going to be thankful that it was there and the utilization will be tremendous."
Superintendent Craig Allen hopes both proposals will pass and said it's important that voters make informed decisions.
"I think it's important to give them the opportunity,” said Allen. “It gives people the chance to come in and express their thoughts and gives us a good gage to see where people are in the community with the proposals...and I think it was a valuable tool for them, and hopefully they can go back and educate some other people on the issue."
Both proposals will be on Tuesday's ballot.
