They're looking for motorists that are under the influence of drugs

LANSING (AP) -- Michigan's police agencies are working to boost the number of officers trained in catching motorists who are driving while high on drugs.

Drug-impaired drivers are much harder for officers to spot than alcohol-impaired drivers, who often can be detected with a quick preliminary breath test.

But the Lansing State Journal reports that Michigan police agencies began an effort this week to greatly expand the number of officers statewide trained in identifying motorists who are driving impaired while drugged.

Officers trained in spotting drug-impaired motorists can take an hour or more assessing a suspected drug-impaired motorist.  That includes even taking a suspect's pulse and blood pressure at the roadside.

Michigan State Police say drug-impaired drivers are no less a menace than drunken drivers.
