MARQUETTE -- Marquette City Police are asking that you turn in your unused or expired medication for safe disposal.

Saturday, April 30, the police department will be collecting prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The service is free and open to the public.

It's an effort to lessen potential dangers that the misuse or abuse of unwanted medications can cause, as well as avoid medication being flushed down the toilet and into our waterways.

"It's easier for us if they bring them in, in a plastic bag and if they're in blister packs, if they just go ahead and open the blister packs and put them all in one bag, turn them in to us, you know, along with the other prescription medication," said Sgt. Ryan Grim of the Marquette City Police.  "And another thing to keep in mind is on the prescription bottles, either tear the labels off or, you know, scribble your name out."

The DEA will properly dispose of the medication after it has been collected by the Marquette City Police Department.
