MANISTIQUE -- U.S. Senator Carl Levin released a statement about more than $43 million in financing for public safety, health care and community improvement projects throughout Michigan.  Three areas in the U.P. are receiving federal funding, including Schoolcraft and Chippewa Counties and Bessemer.

"Investing in our communities pays dividends for yours to come, and these rural development projects will serve critical needs for Michigan residents," said Levin.  "From improving public safety to providing better health care to improving education opportunities, this federal support will help fill gaps in these communities still struggling to recover from the economic recession."

The list of areas receiving the funding are listed below, with U.P. areas in red.

City of Bessemer - $14,000 direct loan to replace the roof on the fire hall.

Brevort Township - $300,000 direct loan to replace the community center and library.

Good news for the health care needs of the people in Schoolcraft County.

In a press release from Senator Debbie Stabenow's office, funding for the new home of the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital has been secured.  The money is through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Agency.  It comes in the form of a $19 million loan.

According to George Montgomery, CEO of Schoolcraft Memorial, they have been working on getting a new facility for more than five years.

The new site is located on US-2 in Thompson Township, just west of the current facility in Manistique.

They are now working to get the final paperwork done and could break ground by August.
