MARQUETTE -- Students from several U.P. high schools met at the Jacobetti Skill Center to enter a competition to see who can build the best ice shanty.
The competition is in its fifth year and included nine U.P. schools including Marquette, Ontonagon and Manistique.
The five-student teams are given blueprints at 9 a.m. and then have the day to build it. Once they are finished, they are judged on things such as time, workmanship and the safety of their project.
The students did not know that they were building ice shanties and deer blinds until they arrived to the event.
"This morning when they walked in is when they got their blueprints; that's when they know what they were building, so we kind of keep it a secret until the day of, and it works out pretty well," said competition organizer, Tony Retaskie. "This year was a little different than last year, and I saw a lot of head scratching going on early this morning, but things are really progressing well now."
Each school gets to keep their project with most of them raffling them off to pay for next year's entry fee.
