MARQUETTE -- After the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters hit the Japanese people, the City of Marquette moved quickly to establish a fund through the Marquette County Community Foundation to accept donations to help out with relief.

The MCCF is accepting donations to go towards Marquette's Sister City of Higashiomi, Japan through September 30.

"While our Sister City was not directly impacted by the devastation seen in many of the coastal areas of Japan, they are actively supporting relief efforts," said Marquette Mayor, John Kivela. "In addition to providing food and material, they are providing housing and support to over 60 families who were dislocated as a result of the earthquake and tsunami."

As of Thursday, April 14, Kivela reported that $5,455 had already been deposited within the city fund established in partnership with the Marquette County Community Foundation.

"I'm proud of the compassion our community demonstrated in response to this tragedy. True character often shines in the worst of times," Kivela said.

Higashiomi's Mayor, Hisao Nishizawa, has sent his thanks to Marquette officials and showed faith in their efforts.

"We're convinced that this fund will continue to grow," said Nishizawa.

Donations to the Marquette County Community Foundation can be sent to:

P.O. Box 37, Marquette MI 49855

In the memo section of the check, a note should be made that it is for Japanese Disaster Relief.
