ESCANABA -- Seniors from the Lake Bluff Retirement Village in Escanaba are working with a registered dietician who's teaching them how to choose a healthier lifestyle.

Eleven seniors took part in UPCAP's Healthy Eating Program.  They meet once a week, and this week they had a supermarket tour where they split into pairs.  They were assigned to choose healthier meats, grains, vegetables, and fruits.

Participating in a group setting also helped them share what works for them.  This helped them create short-term weekly goals.

"One of the things I found out already is that I eat too much sodium," said participant Gene Weiss.  "Sodium is in a lot of things.  I didn't realize how much it's in the canned stuff and the boxed stuff."

There's no cost to attend.

Their next weekly session includes a healthy cooking demonstration.
