NEGAUNEE -- The Local Government and School District Fiscal Accountability Act out of Lansing has raised a lot of questions for local unions and caused a lot of controversy across the state.
The bill gives emergency financial managers the ability to cut collective bargaining rights for unions.
While some say the bill is not as drastic as Wisconsin's, which directly cuts collective bargaining for all unions, local MEA offices say there are more than 30 other Senate and House bills on the table that will impact collective bargaining in Michigan.
"I don't like when people try to devastate public employees and their collective bargaining rights through the back door, and that's what we've been trying to tell our members," said Negaunee MEA Director Stu Skauge. "Our members sometimes look at the one bill that's passed so far on emergency managers, well, how bad is that...it's not the one bill that's going to really hurt us, it's the 40 bills together."
The MEA plans to protest the pending bills over the next few months. To take a look at the bills, head to the website here.
