ISHPEMING -- A third grader at Birchview Elementary in Ishpeming, Christian Carello, picked up a bow two years ago at the age of seven, and he's already winning national competitions. He picked up archery when his father, Vito, began shooting at an indoor range and has since excelled at the sport.
Christian recently returned from the National Field Archery Indoor Competition in Louisville, Kentucky, where he took first place and received the "Robin Hood" award for getting a bullseye, then splitting the arrow with another one.
His father says the younger Carello is constantly practicing at Straightline Archery and is a natural to the sport.
I've been competing for a year," said the elder Carello. "He's been competing since January 1st and he's already shooting the same scores I am; he's actually shooting a little bit better than me."
Christian will compete in the Michigan Archery Tournament on April 10 and then the U.P. Championships at the end of the month.
