HARRIS -- The Island Resort and Casino in Harris used to hold 40 weddings a year at the old convention center. That facility has been under renovation since last November.
But now, the $1.5 dollar project is nearing its final phase.
“It's a business unto itself,” explains casino General Manager, Tom McChesney. “So people who are looking for a space to meet, or if they have a wedding or a trade show or anything like that, can come here."
And the first trade event is already booked for April 20.
This larger site also means more opportunities to accommodate sports events.
“Oh, this is very exciting,” says Hannahville Indian Community Director, David Anthony. “It means we will be up and running and experienced by the time we have some of the big events come here this summer. We’re having an LPGA Futures Event here in June."
The convention center and Island Resort are on the Hannahville Indian Community's reservation, so this progress also means a great deal of pride to them.
“The tribal members said they take a great deal of pride in seeing their investment grow,” Anthony says. “This is the future of tribal members, and to see it done well gives everyone a sense of pride."
The new construction will allow the center to hold over 800 guests. Previously it could only fit 350.
And construction doesn't stop here. The next big construction project for the Island Resort and Casino will be to add 50 new hotel rooms to the Palm Tower.
McChesney also said that there are plans later this year to build a new spa at the casino for people who are looking for more relaxing things to do during their stay.
