A powerful winter storm spinning to our south is bringing buckets of snow and high winds, though most in the U.P. are only seeing a portion of that.
Aside from some lake-effect snow, the vast majority of Upper Michigan will remain snow-free today and may even see a few peeks of sunshine this afternoon. Blustery winds and chilly air will be the only obstacles to contend with.
That is not the case over southern Iron, Dickinson, and Delta counties and over most of Menominee county. The snow on the north end of that storm, which is heavy at times, has advanced only just barely into the U.P. last night and into today. As this storm pushes east and off to the south in the afternoon, these snows will taper off as well. That doesn't mean the totals won't be appreciable--as of this morning, the city of Menominee already had nine inches of snow, and it was still coming down.
The reason for this big discrepancy in the U.P.--and the sharp cutoff as to where the snow is and is not falling--is because of a large, strong high pressure center to our north over Ontario. This has pushed cold, dry air into the area and limited how far the storm to our south could advance.
