HOUGHTON -- The SLAM (Slow Ash Mortality) Team from Michigan Tech has just started setting their first traps for the Emerald Ash Borers, but they've already covered a lot of ground.
They have to cut beneath the bark to make an effective girdle trap. The idea is to weaken the tree and lure the beetles into laying their eggs in a single location.
While a lot of their efforts are focused on the larger infestation, the group is also educating landowners about their options at an insecticide seminar Tuesday night.
"If a tree has been damaged to a significant extent, tree removal is probably the recommendation," said Michigan Tech Professor Andrew Storer. "But if it's in the early stages of infestation, or a tree that doesn't show signs of infestation but is close to trees that do, tree injection is a realistic option."
The seminar starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Forestry Building.
