The collection will stop by the beginning of April
LANSING (AP) -- A judge has ordered Michigan to stop collecting three percent of state employee wages for retiree health care by April 1.
The Lansing State Journal reports that an Ingham County judge on Wednesday rejected a request by state officials to reverse his Feb. 22 ruling on behalf of state employees.
But he agreed to allow the state to keep the money it's collected since last fall--roughly $27 million--in an escrow account pending the state's appeal.
Gov. Rick Snyder's spokeswoman, Sara Wurfel, confirms that the state will ask the Michigan Court of Appeals to stay the order to stop the salary contributions. She declined further comment.
Several state employee unions representing about 28,000 employees sued to halt the wage collection plan Michigan lawmakers approved in September.
