About 300 people came to the reception Saturday evening honoring the former congressman and his wife
MARQUETTE -- After more than three decades of public service, recently retired Congressman Bart Stupak and his wife, Laurie Stupak, were honored Saturday evening in a special tribute reception at N.M.U.
About 300 members of the general public and local leaders showed up to the event and lined up to shake the Stupaks' hands, personally thanking them for their contributions.
Before he was elected a U.S. Representative in 1992, Bart Stupak was an Escanaba police officer, a Michigan State Police trooper, and a Michigan State Representative.
His wife Laurie served as the Mayor of Menominee from 2000 to 2002 and was appointed by former Governor Jennifer Granholm to the Mackinac Island State Park Commission.
The Stupaks said they were honored by the huge turnout at the reception.
"Well, it's great that the Democratic Party up here in Marquette and all of our friends up here put this event on," says Bart Stupak. "Between Laurie and I, we've got 32 years of elected office between the two of us, so it's great, and so great to see so many of my old friends."
Hors d'oeurves were served, and local leaders took the stage to publicly thank the Stupaks for all of their work.
