ST. IGNACE -- A Bay City man has pled guilty to charges of killing three wolves in Mackinac County last month.

A judge in 92nd District Court in St. Ignace last week sentenced 58-year-old William Hayward to a year in jail.  Ninety days will be served immediately, with the remainder of the sentence suspended if he meets the terms of his two-year probation.

Hayward also pled guilty to destroying two tracking collars that had been placed on the wolves by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

He was ordered to pay $3000 in restitution for the wolves, $1500 in fines and court costs, and $590 for the replacement of the tracking collars.  His hunting privileges were also revoked for three years, and the rifle he used to kill the wolves was condemned.

DNRE conservation officers located the three dead wolves in northwestern Mackinac County in January.  An investigation led to Hayward.

Federal charges against Hayward were dropped since the matter was resolved in state court.
