MARQUETTE COUNTY -- The Marquette County Board of Commissioners held their committee of the whole meeting Tuesday, and one item on the agenda was the rehiring of retired county employees.
The county currently does not allow the rehiring of retired employees, but were considering a policy made by the Municipal Employee Retirement System of Michigan that suggested a 720 hour yearly maximum.
Sheriff Mike Lovelace, who is not affected by the current rehiring policy, went before the board to give an example of how this policy could benefit many departments facing employee shortages and budget cuts. However, the board voted seven to two against the motion.
"They should have the ability, just like me, to hire the best they can get, and if that happens to be a retired person, then I think we're discriminating against them," said Lovelace.
Many of the seven board members who voted against the policy stated they simply wanted more information before passing such a motion.
