IRON MOUNTAIN -- UPDATE 5:41 p.m.

When Representative Dan Benishek made his run for congress last year he pledged to repeal the healthcare law.

He made that vote during his first month in the House of Representatives only to see the measure die in the senate.

"They haven't addressed real malpractice reform,” Benishek said. “They haven't addressed the high cost of obtaining health insurance. These are issues that we can solve on the free market."

Benishek agrees with portions of the current law like requiring insurance companies to accept patients with pre-existing conditions but thinks the majority of the law needs to be repealed.

The Drug Store owner Steve Roell came to Bishop Baraga Catholic School Friday to speak to Benishek and voice his concerns with healthcare.

"Sometimes it's very difficult you known when Washington tries to dictate healthcare to us,” Roell said. “They don't always know what's best for the patient."

While others came to ask for the congressman's help.

"Medicaid is not reimbursing enough for them to keep functioning and for these special needs kids there's no other service for them to get parts and repairs on their wheelchairs," said Joe Frisk.

Benishek said he plans on continuing to meet with more people and will start a website so citizens can see and understand the votes he makes in congress.

"I want the people of the First District to be informed and to inform me what they think,” he said. “So I have their input because I am representing them and I want to hear what they have to say."

I sat down with Benishek to discuss a variety of topics including health care, the federal deficit, and what he plans on bringing to the 1st District and the U.P.

I’ll have a live report on your TV6 Early News.
