QUINNESEC -- Safety is the number one concern for most businesses, and a local paper mill is being recognized for it.
Verso Paper exceeded its safety standards last year with a lost work incident rate of only .07.
The Verso Paper Mill in Quinnesec did even better from a safety perspective in 2010 by not having a single injury result in lost work.
Mill officials credit the distinction to constantly stressing safety in the workplace and the positive response by the workers.
"Ownership of the safety program is key, and now that we see every mill member that comes through that door is a leader in safety, we're just seeing our performances go through the roof. It's right where we want it to be and there's always room to grow. We have to continue to work at it, but it means everything to us," said Verso Safety Supervisor, Boyd Morstad.
Verso was also recognized by Michigan for its workplace safety practices in December of 2008.
