MARQUETTE -- If you've never heard of 'ska' and didn't know Scottish bagpipes could rock out, you're probably not alone.
Different is nothing new for NMU's First Aid Productions group, and that's just the way they like it.
"It's great for everyone to have their thing, and you know, not everyone likes the mainstream radio music or that kind of stuff," says Ian Astle of First Aid Productions promotions. "Our group especially caters to people who like that kind of music--underground music, alternative music, different kinds of sounds."
They focus on alternative, the kind of stuff you don't see and hear everyday in mainstream media. Now they're honing in on 'ska,' a music genre that actually originated in Jamaica in the 1950s, and it just might beat the U.P. seasonal blues.
First Aid is hosting Michigan's Mustard Plug and Chicago's Celtic punk band Flatfoot 56 in concert Thursday.
"It's so upbeat, it's so happy. That is great for the winter months when it's starting to drag on and it's been snowing for months," Astle says.
Music lovers can break from the usual parka; all things plaid, checkered or Hawaiian are encouraged at the concert. A one gallon of mustard signed by Mustard Plug is up for grabs for the best dressed.
The concert will take place at NMU's University Center 7 p.m. Thursday. The cost is $10 for the public and free for NMU students.
