The report references about 3,000 state employees

LANSING (AP) -- A report from the Michigan auditor general says the state isn't properly monitoring the way government credit cards are used by about 3,000 state employees.

The Detroit News stated Sunday that the report reviewed 327 purchases by five departments in 2009 and 2010 that totaled $220,000, and found 13 percent of the purchases were not permitted under state rules, including two personal purchases.

The state Department of Technology, Management and Budget oversees credit card use.  Spokesman Kurt Weiss says the agency is taking steps to improve monitoring.

Despite problems, the report says more use of credit cards for small purchases, along with improved monitoring, could help the state save money.

Audits have found problems with the way the cards are used since 1995.
