(AP) -- Owners of some Michigan bars have said for months that the state's workplace smoking ban is costing them money because of decreased business. Turns out the smoking ban that went into effect in May is likely costing the state money, too.
State fiscal analysts said Friday the smoking ban is expected to cost the state about $33 million in lost revenue this fiscal year.
Their report did not cite an exact cause for the revenue loss. But it could be because of lower tobacco sales or declining tax collections from taverns.
Analysts say a federal cigarette tax increase also is costing Michigan money.
Supporters of the ban say it will save the state money in the long run because health care bills should be lower if fewer people smoke.
