UPPER PENINSULA -- Murder, help from strangers, and a world class athlete who carried the hopes and dreams of many in the Upper Peninsula.

Upper Michigan's Source takes a look at stories that kept us on the edge of our seat in 2010.

It was the scene of a homicide.

The victim, 27-year-old Robert Dusseau of Ishpeming, owner of Quik Cash and Guns in Marquette county.   He was found buried in the snow, outside of his business on US-41.  The case, after months, still remains unsolved.

In another incident, a woman, 45-year-old Kimberly Ann Timbrook-Miller of Crystal Falls, robbed the Range Bank in Kingsford on February 17 with a toy gun.  She was later sentenced to serve 12 years in a federal prison.

2010 was also a year to say goodbye.  After 18 years as U.S. Congressman, Bart Stupak announced that he would not be seeking reelection.  He emphasized that his decision was not due to pressure from his controversial vote for health care.

An international tragedy early in the year also impacted the U.P.  After an earthquake shattered the lives of many in Haiti, a Marquette relief group rushed to the scene.  Dr. Daniel Hardie organized a group of doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists, and others to lend a hand to Haitians in their time of need.

2010 also marked celebration.  Local leaders cheered as Ishpeming's Bell Hospital and Marquette General Hospital C.E.O.’s joined forces as Superior Health Partners.  Leaders of the effort believe it will create jobs, cut down on competition between the hospitals, and keep more patients in the U.P.

Since April, there are also new options for travelers flying out of Sawyer International.   Delta Airlines offers daily service to both Detroit and Minneapolis-St.Paul on 50-seat regional jet aircraft.  This means Sawyer is now an all jet airport.

And finally, while the whole world watched the Olympics, the U.P. focused on one event in particular:  the snowboard cross.  That's because Iron River's own Nick Baumgartner captured the imagination of his community with his Olympic run.  The games didn't end with a medal, but Baumgartner says he plans on competing again in 2014.
