With the erosion of its harbor's breakwall, the community of Grand Marais is concerned that its economy will crumble, too
GRAND MARAIS -- With a lack of support from both the Army Corps of Engineers and the federal government, the Grand Marais community is planning to fix it themselves before the harbor fills with sand.
The harbor is crucial to the community's survival as most people living there serve commercial and recreational boaters who flock to it.
The Army Corps of Engineers was going to build a new breakwall, but they claim they ran out of funding.
Now Burt Township is applying for private grants to raise the money themselves, including a $40,000 grant from Reader's Digest.
"The competition is communities all over the nation, it's all over the United States--there's 100 towns that are in it--and it's kind of cool because we're the smallest community in the competition and we're in first place," says Burt Twp. Supervisor Jack Hubbard.
The polls close at the end of the month.
