MARQUETTE -- A Marquette man convicted of possessing firearms was sentenced in Federal Court Tuesday.

Ryan Saari, 34, pleaded guilty to the possession of firearms by a felon as part of an agreement with the U.S. and Marquette County attorneys office.

As part of his sentence, Saari will serve almost ten years in prison followed by three years of supervised release.  Saari must also participate in substance abuse and mental treatment.

Saari's defense plans to appeal the sentencing.

"The two basic objections that we had were he was being held responsible for guns that he gave away eight years ago that hadn't been touched by him for over eight years, and the judge still held him liable for those guns and used that to enhance his sentence or to increase the amount of time that he was going to spend in prison," said attorney Karl Numinen.

Charges of home invasion and assault with a deadly weapon were dropped against Saari as part of a plea agreement.

Saari has also been characterized as a person of interest in the murder of Marquette Township business owner Robert Dusseau last winter.  That case remains unsolved.
