IRON MOUNTAIN -- Thousands of dollars have been poured into Iron Mountain's campaign to revitalize its downtown area, and now the city is looking to be recognized from a historical perspective.
The Dickinson County Board of Commissioners is supporting Iron Mountain's nomination to be included in the National Register of Historic Places.
The distinction would put no restriction on building owners and could mean a 20 percent Federal tax credit for small businesses in the area.
"It helps promote that sense of place and that historic identity of the community which is very important for drawing tourism and additional businesses in your downtown," said Iron Mountain Main Street Coordinator Jonathan Ringel. "It's really your defining feature, your character of your community, your sense of place, so that is what we're hoping to promote."
The city will be notified if the state will support its application in December, and from there the application will be submitted nationally.
