They're challenging you to shop local
MARQUETTE -- Get your holiday shopping done in Downtown Marquette. That's the message of the ShopMIDowntown Holiday Challenge.
"Our local businesses give so much back to our community that we really want to encourage people to shop locally,” said Executive Director of the Marquette Downtown Development Authority, Mona Lang, "and invest their money locally in our community."
And the challenge has a grand prize: a dinner for two at Capers Restaurant, a free night at the Landmark Inn, and two tickets to the Marquette Youth Theater Production of Alice in Wonderland just for shopping local!
But you have to make a purchase to qualify. The rules are simple. The stores include any locally-owned independent business in downtown Marquette or Third Street Village. And that includes restaurants. Once you make a purchase, share your experience at the Downtown Marquette Facebook, include a picture or video. Posting your experience makes you eligible to win the grand prize.
"What we're hoping is that people will see stores and see businesses and see merchandise that they may not have otherwise known that was available," Lang said.
It's also a great way to give back to the community. For every $100 spent locally, $73 stays in the community as opposed to $43 spent at a business that is not locally owned.
“While they do a certain amount of tourism business, the tourists go away, and you come to times like this where they need the support of the local people to keep their doors open," said Marquette County Convention and Visitor Bureau Director Pat Black.
