HOUGHTON -- Lake effect snow showers hit Houghton County Monday afternoon and continued on for much of the day.

Several inches covered the ground Tuesday morning, making for a messy commute on many roads.  Despite the slippery surfaces, most drivers managed to stay safe.

Sanders and graters kept busy all day trying to clear the streets as flakes continued falling.

"The first snow event like we're having today is usually quite trying on drivers and also the motoring public," said County Highway Engineer Kevin Harju.  "The shoulders are still soft so plows are struggling with not sinking in while trying to remove the snow."

It looks like the snow will stay for the next few days, so road crews are reminding everyone to go slow and give extra space when you see them on the street.
