IRON COUNTY -- Firearm deer season has just begun and there's been an gun-related injury already reported. An Ohio man had a gunshot injury to his right foot when visiting Bates Township.
Douglas Shelia, 67, of Chardon, Ohio, sustained an accidental self-inflicted gun shot wound from a 30.06 caliber rifle. The accident occurred off Little Finland Road, according to the Iron County Sheriff's Department.
Shelia was immediately transported by friends to the Northstar Hospital Emergency Room, where he was treated for a non-life threatening "through and through" rifle wound to his right foot. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Iron County Sheriff Mark Valesano reminds everyone that hunters need to be diligent in practicing gun safety at all times and insure a safe and successful hunt for everyone while trying to bag that trophy buck.
