EWEN -- People across the country are honoring veterans in many different ways, but few show their appreciation as much as the students at Ewen-Trout Creek Schools.

Their patriotic poems, musical tributes, and war stories made some people emotional, but mostly the crowd smiled and cheered as the students celebrated Veterans Day with a special program.  The youngest students sang songs while a few older students told about relatives who've served or are currently serving.  The program even included a photo slideshow of veterans from the community.

"We always have a great audience at our shows, but the veterans are so appreciative of what you do," said music director Brad Besonen.  "It just makes it special."

With so many different elements, the annual program has become a favorite event for many who attend, though they give different answers when asked what part they like best.

"I really like the slideshow and, of course, the music that went with it.  It was awesome," said Jim Rayner, a veteran of the Air Force.  "It’s just great to see the kids prepare the songs and learn about the history of the military and our country."

"It’s nice to see what other kids bring to the show, but it's definitely a joy to be able to perform and add to the event myself," said junior Daniel Grayvold.

Of course the festivities didn't end with the show.  Most people stayed at the school to enjoy a free turkey dinner and to look at additional photos and messages of thanks hung throughout the halls.
