ISHPEMING -- Elementary school students partnered philanthropy with fitness on Monday, when third and fourth grade students at Birchview Elementary in Ishpeming used cans of non-perishable food they donated to the TV6 Canathon, to do age appropriate strength training. The kids were able to do various lifting exercises with their soup and vegetable cans. This is the first time the school has done the activity.
"We were doing weight training, like lifting the cans and building strength on our arms and legs, while burning fat," said fourth grader Jacob Pepin.
The activity was also sponsored in part by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Healthy Community grant, which helps Michigan children become more physically active and educates them about healthy eating and lifestyles.
