ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP -- After being closed for more than 20 years, demolition of the West Ishpeming School began Monday.

Crews started tearing down the 95-year-old building in the afternoon.  As they were demolishing the building, workers continually sprayed it with water to prevent too much dust from getting into the air.

Some residents had wanted more investigation to be done before the demolition because of asbestos and potentially diseased birds inhabiting the building for years.

Demolition will take about 10 days to complete.

Future property development won't happen for about another year.
