NORWAY -- "The Trouble in Thor" tells the story of miners and their families in the early 20th century.  Based on the novel of the same name, this story of a mining tragedy will hit close to home for many U.P. residents.

"It's about mining towns, and it's about how the miners’ lives were,” said director Gail Galotta.  “The immigrants who came here and how they struggled and how they survived and how some of them unfortunately did not."

The cast members range in age from 13-82, and the play is giving everyone involved a chance to expand their horizons.

"They're two kids from the college that I'm involved with, but aside from that, I never met anyone else here and so it was just neat for me,” said actress Elisabeth Pluth.  “I’ve been at the college really kind of just there, so to get an opportunity to meet people in the community more, as opposed to just on the college campus, has been neat."

What makes "The Trouble in Thor" so unique is its historical significance.  The play takes place 86 years ago in the Norway-Vulcan area, giving everyone a unique look at the past.

All the proceeds from the performances will be donated to the Community Enhancement Society which is working to preserve some of the U.P.’s mining history reenacted in the play.

"The names of these people are still the names in this area and whether it's Marquette, Negaunee, Norway, Vulcan, even Iron Mountain,” Galotta said.  “This is a story that is close to everyone's heart."

"The Trouble in Thor" opens at Negaunee High School Sunday at 2 p.m. and will be performed at the Norway Fine Arts Center October 29 and 30.
