POLL - Alger County economic boost

It's taken nearly five years and $14 million, but now H-58 is done.  The completely paved road runs from Munising to Grand Marais and offers better access to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Representative Bart Stupak is excited about what the road means for Alger County.

"Economically, it really ties the county together and economic development.  You're already seeing signs of new businesses springing up, especially on the east end by Grand Marais and Melstrand, that are up there, so for us, not only does it complement the park, it's a great economic boost for the county," says Stupak.

But not everyone agrees.  After Friday's dedication ceremony of H-58, more than 100 Grand Marais residents silently held up signs, pleading with government officials to save the harbor.  With the erosion of its harbor's breakwall, Grand Marais is concerned that its economy will crumble, too.

"Our concern is, did they just spend a bunch of money to build this road to nowhere?  Without our harbor, we will not have a community there, and we're concerned with this.  We're going to keep working hard to try and get this problem solved," says Jack Hubbard, Township Supervisor.

In the Daily Pulse, we're wondering your thoughts on H-58.

Will H-58, which now connects Munising to Grand Marais, provide an economic boost to Alger County?  Yes or no?

Vote in the poll below, then tune in to your FOX UP News Monday for the final results.
