Volunteers sought to restore Porcupine wilderness

(AP) -- Michigan authorities have asked the public to help restore native vegetation in part of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in the western Upper Peninsula.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment has recruited volunteers for the work Saturday at the Lake of the Clouds Scenic Area.

The 60,000-acre wilderness area is along Lake Superior near the unincorporated community of Silver City.  It contains rare stands of virgin timber, miles of wild rivers, and black bears.

The department says volunteers will help with erosion control and native vegetation restoration work.
