Marquette firefighters visit schools as part of Fire Prevention Week

MARQUETTE -- Waking up to a room filled with smoke could be frightening for anyone.  But now second and third graders at Superior Hills Elementary in Marquette can say they've been through it and know what to do to survive.

The Marquette Fire Department visited the school with their Firehouse Friday as part of Fire Prevention Week.  The kids were able to see what a firefighter looks like in their gear, learn about safe kitchen practices, and simulate a house fire situation.

A control room emits non-hazardous "smoke," and kids learn to drop and find a safe exit.  They finish with a call to the fire department to report the fire.

"We try and make it as realistic as possible," says Dean Mallos of the Marquette Fire Department.  "A firefighter in gear with a breathing apparatus can sound kind of foreign, and we don't want the kids to be afraid in the event of an actual fire.  So this familiarizes them a little bit."

About 900 kids will be reached by Fire Prevention Week activities in Marquette this year.
