GPS and onboard cameras

DETROIT (AP) -- A GPS-tracking system and onboard cameras are among new safety features on Detroit Public Schools buses this year.

The district plans to demonstrate some of the features Friday morning at Brenda Scott School.  The measures are expected to improve the safety of students riding First Student, ABC Transportation, and Safeway buses.

Other enhancements include crossing gates to make sure children cross in front of buses at safe distances, an electronic system that ensures no child will be left on buses, and a system that allows transportation staff to monitor the locations and speeds of buses.

The district has outsourced bus service this year for more than 22,300 students.  Some of the safety enhancements are part of the new bus service contracts.
