Deep fryer was the cause

MARQUETTE -- A small house fire broke out on Wright Street in Marquette at around 6 p.m. Tuesday.  It all started when the owner was heating oil in his deep fryer.  He walked away to take a shower and returned to find a small fire.

The homeowner tried to put it out with water, but that made it spread to floors and the wall.  He was eventually able to put it out with a fire extinguisher.

The Marquette City Fire Department checked for fire in the walls and ventilated the home.

The man's wife rushed home from work when she heard the news and says she's relieved that everyone is okay.

"Everybody's safe, everybody's accounted for, all the animals are safe, there's not alot of damage, thank goodness.  A little bit of smoke damage.  We're going to stay out of the house for a day or two and get some things taken care of.  Luckily, all said and done, everything was minor in my eyes.  The most important thing...everyone is okay and well," said the homeowner's wife, Nadine Carlson.

The homeowner was treated for burns on his hands and feet.  His two cats and dogs escaped the home safely.
