Mattresses can range from under $500 to up to $1,500
ESCANABA -- Most people will spend about a third of their life in bed. So having the right mattress is important not only for comfort, but for your health as well.
But how do you know which kind to buy? From firm to ultra plush, there are many different types of mattresses to choose from. And if firm is what you're set on, you may want to keep your options open.
"Each mattress has a firm base and then its personal comfort layers on top," explained Andrea Davenport with Heynssens & Selin's. "So you may believe you need a firm mattress, but it's actually the comfort layers on top that are going to support the lower of your back and fill those voids."
Another thing to remember is to take your time when shopping for a mattress, that way you can lie down and test it out. Because sometimes what may feel extremely soft to the touch, could be firmer than you think. And mattresses can range from under $500 to up to $1,500; quality comes with price.
"As it goes up, you're getting comfort layers, you're getting more coil count, so it's really important, of course, to not overspend, but make sure you're getting a high quality mattress," Davenport said.
Life expectancy of a mattress is actually only 8 to 10 years. So even though some warranties say 15, Davenport says it’s better to invest in a new one.
Chiropractors agree...they say a bad mattress can ultimately lead to a bad back.
"There's going to be a lot of muscle tightness to begin with," explained Dr. Marty Laurila with HealthQuest. "If I take x-rays on a patient, we're going to see an imbalance in the pelvis as well as an imbalance along the spine."
Something else when replacing a mattress, don't forget about the box springs. Those deteriorate at about the same rate as your mattress.
