Alzheimers Association hosted a memory walk
ESCANABA -- Eighty-five hundred people are currently living with Alzheimers, and the Alzheimers Association is raising awareness about the disease.
About 75 people came to the Escanaba Senior Center on Saturday to participate in a walk for Alzheimers. All participants raised money to try and find a cure.
"I'm out here in honor of my husband. He's been diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2003, and I just feel it's important to get the word out; we need to light a fire under people just to spread the word and find a cure," says Kitty Topper of Carney.
"There are a lot of people, again, who have misconceptions about the disease or are worried about telling people they have the disease, or even asking if maybe that's what's going on, so this is a chance, again, for people to get more information about the disease, to understand how important it is to reach out to services, and that there are services," says Ruth Almen of the Alzheimers Association.
There will be several more memorial walks around the U.P. throughout the month of September.
