The millage rate increase is for six years
MARQUETTE COUNTY -- Marquette County voters have spoken, and millage rates are on the rise in seven municipalities to expand the Iron Ore Heritage Trail.
The millage rate increase is for six years and will create a 48-mile, year-round, multiuse trail that connects Harvey in the east to Republic in the west.
The Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority says "thank you" to the voters and wants them to know that they'll be putting their money to good use.
"We've been doing this piecemeal, two miles at a time. With the good graces of the voters, now we can bite off a bigger chunk at a time and get our communities connected," said Carol Fulsher with the Recreation Authority.
Right now, the trail is in bits and pieces. The segment from Negaunee to Ishpeming opened in 2008.
The authority hopes by next summer to have the trail connecting Negaunee to Marquette.
