MARQUETTE -- To most of America, he's known as 'Joe the Plumber.'

After gaining national attention during the 2008 presidential election for asking tough questions of then Democratic candidate, Barack Obama, on Saturday Samuel Wurzelbacher made a stop in the U.P. as he endorsed a local candidate running for a state seat.

Wurzelbacher, otherwise known as 'Joe the Plumber,' spoke to about 100 Republicans at a political rally at the Marquette Commons.  Wurzelbacher announced his endorsement for Congressional candidate Dan Benishek.

He says he's attended a number of tea parties in northern Michigan, and after hearing about the candidates running for Congressman Bart Stupak's soon-to-be-vacant seat, he did some research and eventually chose Benishek to give his support to.

Wurzelbacher says he came to the U.P. to encourage people to get involved and to talk to them about how principles are the key to solving major issues.

"Ultimately I'm just trying to bring more people out so that they actually get involved.  I mean they can look at me as a novelty, a notoriety, a celebrity.  However they want to look at me, I really don't care, just as long as it gets them more interested in the process," says Wurzelbacher.  "That's what I'm doing--going around, trying to get great Americans elected.  I never tell people to vote for them though; I just want them to come out and learn for themselves."

'Joe the Plumber' also travelled with Benishek to make another campaign stop in Escanaba Saturday evening.

The pair will make a series of stops in the First Congressional District Sunday as well.
